Hiking Recipe: My favorite trail mix

Although I have not gone out on a hike since last summer, I hope to get out more this summer. Years of Boy Scout activities and outings with friends and family have consistently instilled in me the power of a good trail mix. The recipes are endless. All you really need is protein and sugar in a zip lock back. That is where personal preference comes in to account. I’ll relay my personal favorite combination.

Peanuts

You can’t go wrong with this classic trail companion.  Salted or honey roasted peanuts, either way works for me.

Cashews

Not much flavor here for me, but cashews are a really good, healthy option to give you that energy needed on a mountain.

M&Ms

No matter how many you put in, there never seems to be enough m&ms in the bag. Also, they were kind of made for trail work. Remember that slogan? Melt in your mouth and not in your hand.

Pretzels

Some starch to balance out the meal inside your plastic bag. Pretzel sticks conserve space the best and are easily picked out amongst the rest.

Raisins

What! A teenager advocating for raisins, this must be a joke, right!? No actually raisins are very good amongst all the other unhealthy options. It’s important to stay balanced on the trail and this little dried out fruit really packs a punch. Just don’t under any circumstances put them in my cookie.

Variations

Sometimes I’ll add to this mixture but I can’t remember ever subtracting from the concoction. Anything missing I supplement with a bag of chex mix and a snickers bar. That doesn’t mean store bought is the wonder solution to hiking. Nothing beats the satisfaction of making your own custom built bag of hiking food. I personally don’t like energy bars or anything of the sort. I’ll have

Water, water everywhere

Now all of this trail mix is great for energy and revitalization; however, above all hikers NEED WATER. Break out the nalgenes, Water Purification Tablets , and Camelbak because you need to stay hydrated. Notice how 3/5 of my trail mix is salt. That can dry you out. So after a handful of your trail mix, have a nice gulp of water.
