What Type of Dog is Right for your Insurance?

They say that a man’s best friend is a dog…That may be true, but a dog is not necessarily an insurance company’s best friend.

Over the past 12 years, the average cost per dog bite claim has gone from $19,162 to $32,072 and the number of claims has fluctuated some over the years but has remained close to 16,000. That being said, insurance companies are paying more money per dog bite claim.

What can you do if you want a dog?  You can give us a call and we can tell you the dogs that are generally on the “bad dog” list (Some examples are Wolf Dogs, Pit Bull Terriers, Rottweilers, etc.).  Most companies will not write a Homeowner’s or Renter’s Policy with those types of dogs. However, we do have MPIUA (the Fair Plan) that usually will. That policy may cost a little more, but it may be worth it, depending on how much you love certain breeds of dogs. Another option is the Canine Good Citizen test. This is through the American Kennel Club and if your dog gets this certification, they may be eligible for some insurance companies.

So, enjoy your best friend but be aware of the issues that may turn around and bite you!!
