What to Do After a Blizzard

named_stormAs I write this post, I can hear the winds of blizzard Juno outside and see the snow piling up in my yard. Like many New Englanders, I've grown accustomed to losing power due to weather events once in a while, but it's important to know what to do both during and after an event. In this post, I'll focus on what to do after a blizzard.

First, check for home damage. Check for fallen trees or branches outside, and begin repairing or scheduling repairs for any damage. However, don't overdo it; if you're older or struggling with health issues, overexerting yourself in cold temperatures outside could lead to a heart attack. Don't be afraid to ask for help.

Check on your neighbors (especially seniors) to make sure that they're okay, and help them out if they need it. For example, shoveling their driveway and around their mailbox for them is really kind, and keeps them safe.

Check your house for frozen pipes. Also, check your gutters to see if any debris along with snow and ice has clogged them.

WAIT for the streets to be plowed before you drive anywhere. My sister crashed her car thanks to just a few inches of snow, and while it's unlikely that you'll even be able to get down your driveway with 2 or more feet of snow (like what Juno is bringing right now!), seriously, wait until the roads are completely clear.

For future blizzards and other storms, I highly recommend investing in a home generator to keep some electricity and a snow blower to ease the exertion of shoveling. If your power is still out after the storm has ended, be sure to keep warm. Close off rooms you're not using, and use your fireplace for heat and make sure to wear plenty of layers.
