The warmer weather is here and it is time to bring out the old motorized bicycle or moped.
Here at Gordon Insurance we want to make sure that you know the rules of riding these fun machines.
- Operator and any passengers must wear a helmet. The helmet must meet or exceed the standards established from the US DOT FMVSS No. 218 for motorcycle helmets.
- Operator must be at least 16 years of age and have a driver’s license or Learner’s permit.
- Mopeds may not be operated at speed greater than 25 M.P.H.
- Mopeds may be operated on all public ways (except limited access or express state highways where signs prohibiting bicycles have been posted).
- Moped operators are subject to all traffic laws and regulations except:
- Operator may keep to the right when passing a motor vehicle moving in a travel lane
- Operator shall signal by either hand when stopping or turning.
- Mopeds may be operated on a bicycle lane adjacent to ways but not on recreational bicycle paths.
- Any violation is subject to a fine of up to $25 (1st offense): $25-$50 (2nd offense); $50-$100 (3rd offense).
NOTE: If the vehicle has been certified by its manufacture to meet FMVSS as a motorcycle and is capable of exceeding the speed of 40 M.P.H, it must be registered as a motorcycle.
