Everyone is looking for ways to trim their home insurance premium. Did you know you could save 5-10% on your home insurance premium if you are willing to invest six hours taking a homeowner or condo ownership workshop offered by the Massachusetts Affordable Housing Alliance or MAHA?

The 5-10% discounts are offered by a number of insurers including Commerce, Quincy Mutual and Travelers Insurance.  You do not need to be low income or a first time home buyer to take a workshop. Any home or condo owner can take this free workshop that covers an array of topics including home maintenance and repairs, keeping your home safe from fire and crime,  personal financial management including budget and tax planning, record keeping,  financing home improvements. Owners of owner occupied multi-families are also eligible for the discount.

After you complete the workshop, you will receive a Homesafe certificate to receive a discount on your home insurance. You should give the certificate to your agent to apply the discount. The good news is that the discount is not a one time deal; the discount may remain on your policy with participating insurers for as long as you maintain the policy. For example, if you are paying $1500 a year and earn a 10% discount, this could be a $150 savings per year. Especially after a couple of years, the additional savings really adds up. However, note that the discount applies only to the base premium. It does not apply to additional coverage such as replacement cost on personal property.
