Car Safety and Eyesight

Keep_your_cars_eyesight_good_with_personal_auto_insurance_from_Andrew_G_Gordon_IncHow is your Eyesight? 20/20?

Have you had your eyes checked lately?  How about your car’s “eyesight”?

We all recognize the importance of taking care of our eyes and getting that yearly eye exam, but what about your car’s “eyesight”?

Did you know that some automobile manufacturers now install “eyesight” cameras on their newer models? Previously only available on upscale makes like Mercedes Benz and Volvo, this not-so-new technology is now available in certain Subaru models.

Known as “EyeSight” this technology does not use radar but rather uses two special cameras mounted on either side of the upper windshield. These “eyes” are programmed to detect cyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians as well as the ability to watch over lane markings. An alert is sounded if it looks like the car will cross lanes.  (The warning is turned off when a turn signal is given – good reason to be sure to use your turn signals.)

Another benefit of the eyesight technology is its ability to keep a safe distance from vehicles ahead by either reducing engine power or actually applying the brakes if needed.

As with any technology, even “EyeSight” has its limitations – for instance weather conditions such as heavy fog, snow or heavy rain – which may have the ability to “blind” the cameras. It is not a replacement for safe driving habits – staying alert, adhering to the rules of the road and being courteous to other drivers will assure you of an enjoyable driving experience.
