Benefit of Having Medical Payments On Your Mass Auto Policy

PIP_coverage_auto_insurance_Andrew_G_Gordon_Inc_MAIf you were injured in a car accident, how would the injuries get paid?

We all think it’s no big deal; I have Personal Injury Protection on my auto policy up to $8,000.

This is true, because Massachusetts is a no-fault state. By law, each of us is required to purchase Personal Injury Protection (PIP); this is usually $8,000 in coverage if you did not elect a deductible.

Personal Injury Protection (PIP) pays for reasonable medical expenses, lost wages, and reimbursement of replacement services. But, did you know that PIP only pays the first $2,000 in medical bills? That’s right, Once PIP exhausts the first $2,000 in coverage, and it will defer any outstanding and future medical bills to your health care provider.

The remaining $6,000 is available for lost wages, and any medical expenses not covered by your health insurance, such as deductibles, co-pays, and non-covered services.

The only exception is if you have Medicare or Mass Health, then PIP will pay the full $8,000 in medical payments.

Once the $8,000 in PIP benefits is exhausted, you will then have to pay all co-pays, deductibles, or non-covered expenses from your own pocket.

If you elect to have additional medical payment coverage on your policy, then you will have additional benefits to pay for those out of pocket expenses.

Available coverage can be as little as $5,000 or as high as $25,000. After your first $2,000 of PIP coverage is exhausted instead of the bills being forwarded to your Health insurance carrier, your medical payments start right in.
